HCMCWA Club Championships – Rd 2

- Report and photos John Innes

The weather, at best described as ‘shocking conditions’, didn’t deter the strong field of sidecars made up in equal parts of moderns and historic outfits. It was the debut meeting for the youngest sidecar team in WA racing of Dillan McDermott/Chelsea Leonard who were riding the Rick Hanger Racing F1 short outfit. A total of 13 outfits entered for the round, and it was Des Harvey/Ian Menmuir who put the Watson Racing F1 outfit on pole position with a qualifying lap of 59.4790 seconds. Race 1 saw Harvey/ Menmuir lead the field away, leading for the first four laps before Harvey was forced to slow with a fogged visor, allowing Jero Joyce/Corey Blackman past for the win, they held on for second place with Murray Stronach/ Steve Marshall taking third spot. Inexperience and slick tyres saw McDermott/ Leonard spin out at Turn 2, they put their heads down and worked their way back up to 8th position by race end. In Race 2 it was again Harvey/ Menmuir that led initially but it only lasted until the first corner when the outfit died putting them out of the race and ultimately the round. Again Joyce/Blackman took full advantage storming to a second win ahead of Stronach/Marshall and Kevin Webb/Martyn Dunbar-Stuart took the minor podium place. Race 3 with Harvey/Menmuir missing, the expectation was that Joyce/Blackman would control the five lap race, but they got just about the worst start imaginable and it was two of the young teams that led the field, the brother/sister combo of Sam and Gaby Watson stormed to the lead followed by McDermott/ Leonard. By race end Joyce/Blackman had redeemed themselves with a third win and McDermott slipped underneath the hard charging Watson to grab a hard fought second place in the race and third outright for the meeting. The meeting points saw Joyce/ Blackman take three wins for 75 points, second with 55 points was Stronach/Marshall with McDermott/ Leonard third with 54 points. Just a quick mention for David Gardiner (MDH Tuning Kawasaki 300), David is new to motorcycle racing, this was just his third meeting and he won the Thunderbike class, and then acted as passenger for Hugh Briotti in the sidecar division, which were back-to-back races, a great effort mate. They had a DNF in race 1 and two 8th places.
