A town like Alice
Frequent contributor Peter Whitaker seeks information on the Alice Springs Motor Cycle Touring Club, which was formed around 1951. The photograph shows members of the new club in Hartly Street, with an amazingly diverse range of motorcycles, including what would have been a very new Series C Vincent Comet on the left. The club’s motto was ‘There and back”, which is the same used today by the Finke Desert Race, which began in 1976. The photo was taken by Marylyn Nichols, and the office bearers of the original club were Gordon Nichols (president), and Mrs V. Nichols (secretary), Len Tuit (patron), Ray Duffield (captain), B. Davis (treasurer) and L.Knopel (sports secretary). If you can provide further information or photos of the club, Peter can be contacted at pedrontweed@hotmail.com
