Peter Crozier

- From Paul Keem

PETER CROZIER, who has passed away aged 86, grew up in Oakleigh, Victoria, where his father was the local butcher. Post-war, Peter was introduced to the Hunter brothers, Ron, Murray, and Don, at their nearby factory. He joined Hartwell MCC in 1950 and his first solo race bikes included a BSA Bantam and a Gold Star which he raced mostly in scrambles and grass tracks. Later he became a passenger on road race outfits with Dave Randall and Lindsay Urquhart, racking up impressive results at venues such as Phillip Island, Fishermans Bend and Longford. One of his proudest moments was on a solo at a Fishermen’s Bend Sprint day where he recorded FTD on Arthur Pimm’s Vincent. After serving with distinction as committee member, and starter and judge, he was awarded Life membership of Hartwell club in 1974. He continued with the club committee until the 1980s then stepped aside to let the younger folk have a go. The sudden passing of his wife Carmel in 2008 hit him pretty hard, and his mate John Basemore encouraged him to take up archery for a few years. Peter passed away peacefully at Noble Gardens Nursing Home, within earshot of Sandown Park. 91-year-old John Basemore gave a moving eulogy at his funeral, where a popular tribute was his cremation in his racing leathers.
