Old Bike Australasia

Up the creek

-

Interesting bit about the Sporting Trials in the latest OBA; so popular when I got my first road bike in '57 I bought with my 'reserved' pay after finishing Nashos boot camp. That was the first and only bike I had then and I rode it in my first 'competition'. The event was a sporting trial 'under the power lines' near Deadmans Creek (near Heathcote in Southern

Sydney). The event was a 'S.A.C.' meeting (Sydney Associated Clubs.) I might add the bike was my ride to work machine and not entirely suited to the job at hand! However I and the bike survived the event with not a scratch, even though the marshal following me had to pretty well run to keep up with the 500 Ajay first gear. Massive points were lost! Our Merrylands club went on to run regular club sporting trial days over the years 'under the power lines.' You may like these two pics from 'Back in the Day'. The first photo is of road racer Bill Dillow, the second is club all rounder Keith Jones, long time Merrylands DMCC Club Secretary. One of the mainstays of Sydney Associated Clubs, the late Arthur Hobson is following the rider, looking for "Dabs."
