Rare machines for Bonanza
There will be plenty of famous names and motorcycles at Easter at the 2019 Shannons Insurance Broadford Bike Bonanza, but none more highly credentialed than the fabulous exworks 350cc Moto Guzzi Grand Prix racer ridden during the 1956 and 1957 seasons by several Guzzi works riders, including our own 350cc World Champion Keith Campbell. This incredibly rare machine is now owned by Ron Angel, and will be on display throughout the weekend. The light and agile single cylinder 350 Guzzi works bikes were the class of the field, defeating the four cylinder Gileras and MVs and the ageing British singles to take the World Championship in 1953 and 1954 (Fergus Anderson), 1955 and 1956 (Bill Lomas), and 1957 (Keith Campbell) after which Moto Guzzi, along with Gilera, quit the GP scene. Ron Angel’s example is one of only two six-speed models built by the factory. The other has long since disappeared, making Ron’s bike totally unique. The Guzzi will be just one part of an incredible display of 15 bikes from the Angel collection, representing everything from one-off creations to ex-works bikes. Another unique machine appearing at Easter will be a replica of the first CB750 Honda-engined racing outfit built anywhere in the world (see OBA 77 page 111). Both the original and the replica were built by sidecar legend Lindsay Urquhart – the original campaigned with immediate success. With help from his son Rob, Lindsay has recreated the famous outfit, which will take to the track for demonstration runs over the weekend. This year’s Bonanza, from 19th-21st April, will showcase 50 years of the Honda CB750, plus a huge number of sidecars from all racing disciplines.
