All rounders
In the article ‘Across the Great Divide’ on Geoff Taylor (OBA 76) you mention he has the rare distinction of winning Australian Championships on both solos and sidecars, and in motocross and road racing. Possibly only the late Ken Rumble can match that claim. I believe my grandfather Charlie May has a claim. He won the 500cc solo Australian Scrambles Championship at Sheidow Park, South Australia in 1954 and the Unlimited Sidecar Scrambles Championship in 1959 at Royal Park, Adelaide.

Thanks for your email Shaun. Ken Rumble raced sidecars after retiring from scrambles, and in 1970 he won the Australian Junior Sidecar Grand Prix at Mallala. However this was not an Australian Championship – the national titles were awarded to the Australian TT at that time until this was replaced by the present multi-round Australian Road Racing Championship in 1973. Nevertheless Ken was a superb all-rounder. Thanks also for the details on Charlie May, another highly talented competitor. – Ed
