Amco 1000: Were you there?

The Amco 1000 Desert Rally of 1975 is remembered as a short-lived and somewhat shambolic event, and our frequent contributor Peter Whitaker is trying to track down information and photos from the event. Running between Broken Hill and Renmark on the 1975 Queens Birthday long weekend, the event attracted around 100 starters including top enduro riders John Atkinson, Laurie Alderton, Hans Appelgren, Rod Tingate and Jim Dowsett, plus speedway star Jim Airey. More than half the field got lost and were stranded overnight in minus 2 degree C temperatures, and there were some serious accidents. Of the 97 starters, only 48 eventually made it to the finish, while seven finished up in hospital. Needless to say, the Amco 1000 was destined to be a one-off.
