Regarding your article on the Triumph Tigress in OBA 77, I brought my T20 scooter to impress my girlfriend in 1988 when we were living in Waverton in Sydney. I saw it in the window of Joe Kadar’s shop where I used to go for my Trident’s parts. He warned me that it wasn’t running but it came with some ‘spare parts’ consisting of a job lot of clapped out engine bits. Well, it finally ran in 2018 – and my girlfriend was impressed! Thankfully she married me despite the Tigress but now she doesn’t want to ride it – very sad…
Here’s a picture (above) of what it looks like under the cowls. The exhaust is wrapped to try to reduce the vast amount of heat the 250cc powerplant generates. The designer of the engine had a good look at the VW air-cooled engine – the four-stroke unit looks just like a scaled-down version of one half of a flat four.
