Tame Ti­gress

Re­gard­ing your ar­ti­cle on the Tri­umph Ti­gress in OBA 77, I brought my T20 scooter to im­press my girl­friend in 1988 when we were liv­ing in Waver­ton in Syd­ney. I saw it in the win­dow of Joe Kadar’s shop where I used to go for my Tri­dent’s parts. He warned me that it wasn’t run­ning but it came with some ‘spare parts’ con­sist­ing of a job lot of clapped out en­gine bits. Well, it fi­nally ran in 2018 – and my girl­friend was im­pressed! Thank­fully she mar­ried me de­spite the Ti­gress but now she doesn’t want to ride it – very sad…

Here’s a pic­ture (above) of what it looks like un­der the cowls. The ex­haust is wrapped to try to re­duce the vast amount of heat the 250cc pow­er­plant gen­er­ates. The de­signer of the en­gine had a good look at the VW air-cooled en­gine – the four-stroke unit looks just like a scaled-down ver­sion of one half of a flat four.
