Old Bike Australasia - - BLOW YOUR OWN -

Reading Edgar Jessop’s dog exploits in OBA 79 reminded me of some photos I have in my archives. One shows Vic Huxley with what I presume would be the team mascot. There is also a cigarette card issued by Imperial Tobacco, the illustration taken from the same photograph. Vic won the Star Riders Championship in 1930 (forerunner of the World Championship) and was one of the highest paid sportsmen in the world at the peak of his career. The other shot was taken in 1931 and according to my friend in the UK, Mike Kemp, the dog’s name was Buster and was the Southampton team mascot. The late John Chaplin identified the riders, who are Ernie Rickman, Norman Parker (holding the dog), Steve Langton, Jack Parker accepting the trophy with Vic Collins next. The man in the white suit is promoter Jimmy Baxter, credited with starting the league system. Maybe the same dog in both photos? Brian Darby www.briandarby.info
