Old Bike Australasia

Remembering Roger

- Phil O’Brien Via email

I was very interested to read the article on Roger Barker, in issue 81 of my favourite bike mag Old Bike Australasia. In 1968, the first year of my two seasons racing on the Continent, as part of the “Continental Circus” I competed at Schlietz, the same circuit at which Roger sadly lost his life.

I can’t have been very successful, as I remember very little of the meeting, excepting, that when leaving the circuit, (which, by the way was located in the thenCommunist region of Germany), I needed some welding repairs to be carried out on my van, so called in at a workshop/petrol outlet. There, hanging on the wall was a large framed and autographed picture of Roger, who had called into the same workshop, some years earlier, for some repairs. It was a moving experience, knowing that, at that remote village, a fellow, and talented Ozzie had been there before me.
