Mighty Murray
I was browsing through the OBA 84 – as I do before a serious read – and noticed that issue 85 will include an article on the fantastic Murray Williams. Your terminology of ‘Sidecar Supremo’ is spot on. I remember seeing Murray and his passenger blast all competition to the weeds. You could bet your super fund on this team and you would not have any worries. During the 2017 Sellicks Beach races I was cruising the pits when I spotted this beautifully turned out sidecar. I mentioned to the chap alongside it that this reminded me of an outfit I saw racing in the 1960s. Who raced that unit? My response was, ‘Murray Williams’, “Ah,” said the man. “He is just over there, I will get him to come over.” Murray came over with that welcome smile, we shook hands and talked about those fun days on the circuits around Adelaide. I reminded him of the crowd going ‘Boonta’ at his riding skills and his passenger all over the sidecar like a rash. I asked if I could have a photo of him standing by his outfit and he obliged. Oh boy it made my day and the photo is attached here.
Murray was one of the finest competitors – he gave no quarter – and if you had the power to pass him you had to go around the long way, but he was fair and very much a gentleman that many of us had the pleasure to watch.
