Laverda’s ‘GS’
I just read the article on the development of the BMW GS in OBA 88. It was interesting to learn that Lindsay Urquhart built a ‘GS’ before the factory. That bloke is full of surprises. However there was a significant gap in your story. Perhaps you were aware, but left it out in the interest of brevity, that much of the prototype development of the GS was done by Moto Laverda in 1978. I’m not a BMW aficionado so I’m not particularly well informed on their history. However, I am something of a Laverda tragic, and the Laverda contribution to the BMW GS development is well known among us Laverdisti.
Cam Douglas Bellerive, Tasmania
The motorcycle is a Campion, made in Nottingham from 1901 to 1925 using various engines. Campion was basically a push bike company so presumably made their own frames. The caliper-style front brake is unusual although Douglas used these. Hard to tell from the photo what sort of engine is used. – Ed
