Riding a lap of Australia will never be an experience to be undertaken lightly, and 75 years since it was first achieved by Arthur Grady on his 350cc Douglas, it remains a challenge. London-born author George Lockyer is a man of considerable motorcycle experience, having travelled the world on two wheels for over 40 years. A stone mason by trade, George, who these days lives in Christchurch, New Zealand with his wife Karen, is also an accomplished writer and super-keen rider, who has had his motorcycling adventures published in numerous magazines in Australasia. His 2017 book, The Long and Winding – Aoteroa; detailing his trip on a Triumph Bonneville, has been widely acclaimed. ‘Tales and Trails’ follows George’s circumnavigation of Australia on his Kawasaki KLR 650 which he calls ‘Percy’. Along the way he meets a string of interesting characters from many different walks of life, usually sharing the common bond of motorcycling. The book is full of excellent colour photographs, but once again, captions would add another dimension.
