The story began more than 50 years ago when Christer R. Christensson began buying motorcycles that he considered classic or collectable that were mostly restored by a team of experts in Sweden led by Ove Johansson. What began with a handful ended up numbering over 400 – a truly eclectic line up from manufacturers around the world, plus some unique hand crafted examples. 140 of these went on display in a hall in Stockholm in 1999, but a series of moves meant that Christensson and Johansson eventually ran out of room and offered 235 examples for auction at Mecum’s 28th Annual Las Vegas sale. These ranged from an 1894 Hildebrand & Wolfmuller replica to pioneering American models, British, European and Japanese classics and a number of Swedish motorcycles. Amazingly, 224 of the 235 offered found new homes. This book focuses on 22 of these, all exquisitely studio photographed with an interesting and informative text on each one. These are mainly racing or sporting models, from early US board trackers, the successful Swedish Lito motocrosser, AJS 7R and Matchless G50 ‘privateer’ racers, a Honda CR750, to more modern items like an MV Agusta Serie d’Oro, a Ducati-engined Vyrus, and a BMW HP2 Sport. The large format book is beautifully presented and excellent value. ■
