OBA Classic Challenge
Historic Competition Motorcycle Club of WA – King of Collie
Just one month after WA was sent into a five day ‘lockdown’ which had the potential to seriously disrupt the motorcycle racing program for the entire year, the HCMC put on a brilliant first meeting for the 2021 season.
With perfect weather for the twoday event and a big entry list, it was the perfect start for the year. One man who made it a perfect start not only to the year but his racing career in Western Australia was Vince Thomson. The 54 year-old Scotsman who emigrated to Australia 14 years ago has been involved with bikes since his early childhood and had raced in Scotland, but he hadn’t raced a bike of any description for over 20 years. He had never even seen the Collie circuit until he arrived on Saturday, and was on a borrowed motorcycle as his race bike was not ready in time. He took pole position after qualifying and backed it up with three wins from as many starts, with his best winning margin 19 seconds, ironically over John Mathers, the man who loaned him the bike for the weekend.
At the other end of the age scale was Calvin Moylan, racing a Yamaha YZF – R15 in the Juniors who scored three victories ahead of Abbie Cameron (YZF – R15) with three second places and Kobi Treversh (Honda CBR 150) three thirds. Junior racing is all about camaraderie and friendship off the track whilst having a healthy rivalry on track and the current group are no exception.
