Winton 2+4
After a year off due to COVID-19, Australia’s longest-running Historic race meeting bounced back on its traditional date just before the start of winter. Of necessity, there were restrictions on the entry and the number of pit crew and spectators, but the meeting still had an air of elation that the racing had returned. Motorcycle entry actually exceeded the 100 allotted spaces and 120 were permitted to start. Saturday’s weather was perfect and although the program ran progressively later due to earlier incidents, the scheduled two rounds of each class were completed. Sunday’s weather was just as brilliant, with the racing to match.
Former TT winner Cam Donald had a busy weekend, racing the Team Gallur Vincent Grey Flash in the P3 500 class and the Irving Vincent outfit (with his partner Kaz Anderson in the chair) to victory in the P4 Unlimited Sidecar. Garth Francis also did double duty with two solo rides and his normal dominant performance in the P3 Unlimited Sidecar. The P3 500 races provided some nail-biting finishes between Bob Rosenthal on Geoff Clatworthy’s Norton, Donald and Francis, with 73-year-old Rosenthal and Cam Donald sharing the wins two apiece. At the trophy presentation competitors universally expressed their thanks to the organisers for putting on a highly enjoyable and successful meeting which heralded the return to Historic Racing in Victoria.
