The self-proclaimed “World’s Fastest Maori” is one of motorcycle racing’s more colourful and versatile characters; excelling at Speedway, Grass Track, Long Track and even Ice Racing. Winning the 1969 British League Championship was no mean feat considering the strength of the opposition, and ten years later he won the Speedway World Cup for New Zealand with team mates Ivan Maugher, Larry Ross and Mitch Shirra. He qualified three times for the final of the World Ice Racing Championship, the only Anzac to do so. Injuries eventually caused his retirement from the British League, and he settled at Halesowen in the British Midlands. With time on his hands during the long British COVID lockdown, ‘Cribby’ has written a book full of his own memoirs as well as contribution from many of his rivals and fans. It’s a very entertaining and humorous read, full of the sort of antics that just don’t happen these days. For instance on one occasion when riding for Cradley in the British League, Cribby was shown the red light and excluded from taking the start. His reaction was to ride up to the light mounted on the fence, unscrew the bulb and throw it away! All proceeds from the sale of this book are going to the Speedway Riders Benevolent Fund, Registered UK Charity No. 208733.
