Old Bike Australasia

Mark Firkin

- Well known Sydney identity MARK FIRKIN passed away in July after suffering a stroke and heart attack. From Alan Jones and Robyn Ellis

In the dirt bike world, Mark was everywhere, and was largely responsible for bringing about the Vintage Motocross revolution. In the 1970s Mark spent some time in the USA, at a period when motocross was booming and local riders were taking the world by storm. The bikes from that era became classics and Mark set about saving many from the scrap heap. In 1988, Mark promoted the first Vintage Motocross (VMX) meeting in Australia at Amaroo Park, which was a great success and responsible for establishing this form of sport in this country.

Back in issue 20 we featured Mark’s Yamaha DT1 on the cover, a bike that had originally been owned by Geoff Eldridge, founder of Australasian Dirt Bike magazine. Mark contributed countless articles for ADB and Ray Ryan’s VMX magazine, and was always to be seen at Vintage MX events. Due to the COVID lockdown, he was farewelled in Sydney in a quiet ceremony.
