The BSA Gold Star reborn

-

At the Motorcycle Live Show in Coventry, UK on December 4, the Indian Mahindra Group, which now owns the rights to the BSA name, showed the first model to be built since their acquisition of the brand.

A statement said, “To stay authentic to its roots, the new Gold Star was designed and engineered in the UK. The new motorcycle incorporates BSA’s DNA and stays a Gold Star that is true to its lineage”. The new “Goldie” certainly looks the part, with the fuel tank, timing chest, seat, mudguards and other items carefully styled to resemble the original. Powered by a 652cc single cylinder liquid-cooled engine with four valves and twin overhead camshafts, the BSA puts out 45hp and peak torque of 55Nm. The dual cradle tubular steel chassis is a further nod to the DBD series – the last of the original line – but with modern suspension and Brembo brakes.

The new Gold Star has been some time coming, and it will also be some time before you will be able to buy one. Informed sources say production will not commence until 2023 at the earliest, and at this stage an Australian distributor has yet to be appointed.

Just as soon as we can get our hands on one, we’ll bring you a full report. If the new Goldie goes as well as it looks, Mahindra will be on a winner. ■
