Visit Warwick’s world
Stay Upright is an Australian institution that has imparted riding skills to several generations of learner riders. Along the way, the man who cofounded Stay Upright, Warwick Schuberg, has amassed an amazing collection of motorcycles, many of which he has restored himself.
“These are not exotic overseas bikes ridden by star riders; they are the type of bike we all enjoyed during the years when I was riding regularly, specifically the ‘seventies,” says Warwick. “Now I would like to give the current generation the chance to see the bikes that defined that era.”
In a real coals-to-Newcastle saga, Warwick’s collection is now housed at Amaroo Park, the same Amaroo Park in Sydney’s northwest that staged the Castrol Six Hour Race, the Mr Motocross Series, the Australian Short Circuit Championships, and much, much more, including the Stay Upright operation for a period. These days, Amaroo Park is much quieter, but home to a collection of original warehouses and factory buildings, a thriving café and restaurant and other small businesses. Within the precinct, Warwick has created his own museum, and he is preparing to open this to the public on a strictly limited basis. “What I envisage is around four to six opportunities per year where clubs or groups can access the collection in return for a donation. This will be strictly a charity function, with all proceeds going to the Kidney Council – an organisation that I am particularly passionate about.”
The collection contains over one hundred bikes, plus all sorts of memorabilia. Although the majority are off-road bikes, there are also road bikes, road racers, and odd-bod specials. It is a unique opportunity to relive the motorcycles that we all remember so fondly, as well as supporting a very worthwhile cause.
