The Bonanza bounces back
• 16-17 April, 2022 – Broadford, Victoria
After a two-year absence due to Covid and travel restrictions within Victoria, one of the favourite events on the classic calendar bounced back over the Easter weekend. In marked contrast to further north, the State Motorcycle Complex was dry and dusty, but all the tracks were well prepared for a large turnout of riders across all the disciplines. While the Enduro riders headed off into nearby bush, the action began with activity on the motocross circuit, the road race circuit, and on the Speedway/ dirt track. Meanwhile the swap meet was doing brisk business as spectators arrived in strong numbers. From 4pm on Saturday, the Speedway Spectacular entertained fans, with 70-times World Finalist Mitch Shirra as the star attraction. Mitch mounted the fearsome 1000cc v-twin Long Tracker known as Black Erna and bravely unleashed 120 horsepower on the tight Broadford oval.
On Saturday evening around 80 people attended the K-Tech Gala Dinner at Broadford Hall, where Alan
Cathcart conducted a series of interviews. On stage during the evening were Australian Superbike Champion Wayne Maxwell, Malcolm Pitman, multiple Castrol 6 Hour winner Michael Dowson, and three times Australian Superbike Champion Shawn Giles. Former Superbike star Scott Stephens was also interviewed by fellow Tasmanian Shaun Lennard. As well as a big turn out of racers and road bikes, the road race circuit also saw appearances from former Superbike star Michael Dowson on the former Pitmans Yamaha TZ750, Alan Cathcart on the ex-Ken Blake Jesser Triumph which is now part of the MA Collection, and the Vincent Rapide that won the 2014 Goodwood Revival, demonstrated by Bob Rosenthal. Easter Sunday was considerably quieter than Saturday, but the on-track action continued until the event closed at 3.30pm. Now planning begins for the 2023, and OBA will bring you all the news as it happens. ■
