Age no barrier for Relay for Life

FLYNN Habets is proof positive that people of all ages can get involved in the Wangaratta Relay for Life to be held on October 20 and 21.

The year six student at Rutherglen Primary School does not let distance cause a problem either.

His team Watermelon has already raised $3594 which is currently the second most by any group participating.

Flynn said he decided to get involved because several of his family members and close friends had died from cancer.

“I also wanted to do it for everyone else in the world who has been affected by cancer, especially paediatric cancer because they are kids just like me,” Flynn said.

“If I were them I would want all the support possible. Every little single bit helps, so that’s why I thought relay for life was a really good idea.”

Flynn, who loves crosscountry running, hockey, swimming, cricket and fishing, as well as maths and science, also liked the physical challenge of do- ing some of the fundraising events.

This is his first involvement in the event but it won’t be his last.

“I think I have already helped raise awareness with the fundraiser held at my school, and I think funding is really important right now because scientists are coming closer and closer to a cure and need funding to do it faster,” he said.

Flynn thanked his school for their support in holding a mini-relay for life in March when the entire school participated in a three hour walk around a relay course they made.

“I especially want to thank Ms Hurley, one of our teachers, because having a mini-relay as my fundraiser was her awesome idea, and the whole Rutherglen community because they were so supportive of the event,” he said.

Anyone wishing to get involved in Relay for Life Wangaratta on October 20, 21 can go tolayfor or call 1300 656 585.
