THE quest for back-to-back premierships is over, with Rutherglen defeating Beechworth in the first semi final by 17 points.

The Bushrangers failed to fire a shot until the last quarter, registering 1.6 (12) through the first three quarters before exploding with two goals to Rutherglen’s four points.

Rutherglen held a nine-point quarter time lead at Sandy Creek Oval on Saturday, holding the Bushrangers to 1.3.

The Cats held the Bushrangers to just three points over the next two quarters of football to stamp their authority on the game.

Beechworth’s Bayden Mom, Ryan Pollock, Charlie Ross were the goal kickers for the Bushrangers, while Billy O’Meara put in a power of work.

The Cats were well served by Sam Edmondson who added a goal to a fine game.

But the fourth quarter goal kicking from the Bushrangers came too late, and the Cats held their nerve to move on to the preliminary final.

For the reigning premiers, Beechworth, their season comes to an end falling in both of their finals games, but will no doubt bounce back hard in 2019.

It wasn’t a failed season by any means with Bayden Mom showcasing his goal kicking prowess, finishing with 41 goals on the season and the Bushrangers winning 11 matches.

The club will hold its presentation night on Friday night at Baarmutha Park, contact the club for tickets.

The count will begin at 6.30pm.
