Firefighters answer the call

- By MARK STEPHENS

AS the bushfire emergency unfolded last week Beechworth firefighters were in action at home, around the district, and at Corryong.

Captain Bruce Forrest has been with the CFA for 45 years and has served during the major fires of 2003 and 2009.

“We are always ready and we can keep Beechworth covered with our four large fire engines, privately owned utes and over 6000 litres of water on hand,” he said.

“Our strike teams are on rotation at home and as far afield as Corryong.

“We have 34 members ready to go and as volunteers we are proud to be able to serve when the going gets tough.

“Our tankers are much safer now with new heat

resistant curtains and inbuilt sprinkler systems to withstand very high temperatures outside whilst maintaining internal temperatures below 50 degrees.” The Ovens and Murray

Advertiser and the whole community wish to thank captain Forrest and his wonderful team and wish them well over the course of what is expected to be a prolonged fire season.
