Industry choices

Owner Driver - - Your Say -

I read with interest in the March edition of Owner//Driver, and other places, that manufacturers and some transport companies want to put more technology in all trucks. Maybe some of that money would be better spent on their drivers. Their choice.

Drivers put themselves under long hours of gruelling work and pressure, then go home at the weekend and talk to their families about whether they have made enough money, whether the family is happy and all is well. Same with owner-drivers, who have to see if they have made enough money not just for family welfare but also to cover fuel, tyres, truck payments etc. Driver’s choice.

I was never a fan of the Transport Workers Union but after 40 years in the industry I feel they are becoming more involved and prepared to work for all drivers in all fields. It’s clear many drivers would benefit from somebody that knows how to back us up and deliver a good outcome. Driver’s choice.

Just a thought – wouldn’t it be healthy for a driver to feel they also have the backing of the Roads & Maritime Services, police, media etc? Their choice!
