The Modmic 5, as the name suggests, is the fifth and latest model of the Modmic, a boom mic attachment designed to turn any set of headphones into a gaming headset. The mic exists in a niche environment but fills the role extremely well, namely those people that have a good set of audio headphones and don’t want to have to shell out for an all-in-one gaming headset so they can chat with their friends online. The mic attached to the headphones by way of a small adhesive magnetic clip. Once that is placed on the headphones, the mic itself can be easily attached and detached, so you can still use your headphones for non-gaming purposes. Attaching and detaching the boom is easy, but cable management is a bit of a problem, as attaching the mic adds another cable to the headphones that have to be managed with clips or a cable sleeve, but either option makes the process of separating the headphones and mic lengthier.

A small switch near the mic head allows users to switch between omnidirectional and uni-directional mic modes. The omni-directional mic mode sounds great and delivers full sounding and clear voice but does pick up some background noise, especially when gaming. The uni-directional mode sounds flatter and less dynamic but occludes most environmental noise, making the mode better suited for heavy gaming sessions. Despite the slightly awkward cable management, the Modmic 5 is an excellent option for those not wanting to forsake their audiophile cans while playing games. DANIEL WILKS
