Smelling Roses

All things in moderation

- Bennett Ring Tech Editor

Technology can be a wonderful way to escape the boredom and problems each of us have to endure through the course of our normal lives. Whether it’s playing a game, building a new PC, reading on a tablet or playing games on your mobile on the tram, there’s a thousand and one ways that it can keep us happy. It can even be helpful in times of need; if you’re feeling alone, jump online and make pals with the thousands of other gamers raiding and shooting.

And yet it can also do the opposite. Get on any form of local transport and you’ll see most of the commuters face’s glued to the screen. I was recently having drinks with a friend at a pub, and we couldn’t believe how many tables of groups were all just scrolling through Facebook rather than chat to the person next to them. And then there’s the moments you miss because you spent too much time playing Battlefield or watching Netflix. I had a family emergency this month where I almost lost a family member, and it made me realise the many hours I could have spent with him instead of being stuck to the couch watching Netflix, or organising a group night in Squad.

I’m not saying that technology is bad, but we must use it in a measured fashion. Just like anything else in life, it’s all about balance, and your love of tech should be a part of a well-rounded lifestyle, where friends, family and other activities are just as important. Don’t let a scare be the reason you realise this, as I did.
