Fresh from the massive success of Sydney’s first big Overwatch esports event, Blizzard has just announced how its global Overwatch League is going to be structured, especially when it comes to how player sign-ups and wages are going to work. And it is serious. Basically, Blizzard is setting up just like a major sporting league, and the really cool news is if you’re an Overwatch player and an adult... you’re part of the recruitment pool. All 30 million plus players are basically free agents, and while Blizzard’s own scouting report ranks the best of the best, everyone has a chance at making the cut. But hey, I’m not expecting a call any time soon.

But if we did, we’d be eligible for some pretty sweet guarantees: • Teams will sign players to one-year guaranteed contracts with the option to extend the contract for an additional year. • The minimum salary for players is USD $50,000 per year. • Teams will provide players with health insurance and a retirement savings plan. • Teams will distribute at least 50% of their team performance bonuses (i.e. money from winning playoffs and other League events) to their players directly. • Teams will provide player housing and practice facilities during the season which will meet professional standards set by the Overwatch League. The official signing window for season 1 of the League will last from the 1st of August to the 30th of October this year, with the Overwatch League itself set to launch later in the year.
