Cougar Surpassion mouse
Dumb name, great mouse
Cougar really seems to have hit its stride of late. Instead of focussing all over the market, it appears that the company has decided to focus more on the high end budget market when it comes to peripherals. The Surpassion may have a bit of a dumb name, but don’t let that put you off – it’s an extremely impressive FPS oriented gaming mouse with some very nifty features. The key feature of the Surpassion is a built in LCD screen flanked by two buttons on the base of the mouse. The screen shows a readout of the current DPI and polling rate, the former which can be adjusted by increments of 50 by holding in one of the base buttons and using the thumb buttons to bring the DPI numbers up and down. The other button allows for the adjustment of polling, and using them both together allows users to change the lift-off distance. This feature essentially takes the place of dedicated drivers.
The rest of the mouse is fairly standard, if somewhat small. The sides feature texturized rubber for grip and the rest of the mouse is smooth plastic. The scroll wheel is rubberised rather than textured but it has nice movement and feels great. Left and right buttons have a bit more give than we’d like but still feel good and the thumb buttons have a surprising amount of travel. The only real problem with the mouse is that it’s quite small and thin. For someone with small hands it will feel great, but if you’re a claw gripper or have long fingers you may want to try before you buy. DANIEL WILKS
