Nier Automata uses strangeness and dissociation to tell a very poignant and human story about what it means to be alive, will, self-reliance, blindly following orders and a number of other things that require multiple playthroughs to uncover the full story of the world and characters. It’s also an amazing action game that smoothly segues between disparate gameplay styles with a simple move of the camera. It’s a game that rewards players for trying new things, exploring everything and being curious. It rewards robots following orders for acting like people and people for caring about the robots. It’s an experience that could only ever have been a game. No book or movie could encompass neither the storytelling techniques nor the feel of the game.
