One of the cool things about attending a game event in Sydney is knowing some of the exhibitors outside of games, too. I first met Clea’s designer, Marcus Lam, at a creative writing workshop as part of Sydney Writers’ Festival. Although he has previously released interactiv­e fiction titles, Clea’s compelling narrative relies more on what isn’t said. Why does Clea’s brother have to make sure she takes her daily potion? Who are the Chaos Servants, why do they want her and what will they do to her when they catch her? Time to find a place to hide.

In terrifying 2.5D, you’re sneaking through corridors, treading lightly. You can peek left or right, as well as through doors. If you hear wet, rapid footsteps, you may get a glimpse of the horror that is stalking you. Flush a toilet and draw them to a handy dead end but, if there’s only one door out of the bathroom, is it worth the risk? My son played this at Play Fare and looked distinctly traumatise­d when he was done. I’m playing it at home, by myself and, actually, what was that noise? Maybe I’ll take a break and see if Robyn next door wants a coffee …
