According to designer, Pewka Zilla, Cursedom was all but abandoned. After a positive reception at Play Fare, however, she is now considering a Kickstarter campaign to fund a final release. The aesthetic initially caught my attention. It’s like a psychedelic iteration of Ultima Underworld that I remember (slightly incorrectly) from childhood; familiar, yet surprising at every literal turn of the dungeon’s walls. Assets and images are sourced, and repurposed, from games of the 90s and early internet archives, which also contributes to a kind of mistaken nostalgia.
You’re a Curseling, cast into a bewildering maze, seemingly for eternity. You’ll meet characters who are as confused as you are, or who have been trapped somewhat longer and can offer advice. In a way similar to Undertale, you’re given options for how to interact and progression happens as you find items and solve a range of Myst-like puzzles. Imagining what objects like the Table of Shapes or the Wall of Eyes might do is endlessly intriguing. I’m definitely hoping for the rest of Cursedom to be successfully Kickstarted.
