FIVE MINUTES WITH…
We take time out to chat with Kurt at Nevlock.
Who are you and what do you do?
My name is Kurt Johnson. I’m Sales Manager at engine component supply specialist, Nevlock.
Pleased to meet you, Kurt! When was Nevlock established?
Seventeen years ago. The company is widely known for providing all types of internal engine componentry for many different applications, including automotive, marine and aircraft.
How long have you been employed by the business?
I joined Nevlock twelve years ago. I owned an Astra G GSi and recognised a gap in the market for a retailer of genuine Vauxhall spares at low cost. Back then, there were few alternatives to main dealers when it came to the purchase of parts, and the independent companies which were advertising genuine GM items were charging a massive premium, making their offerings only marginally cheaper than buying direct from Vauxhall. Nevlock quickly expanded its portfolio to include OEM GM service and maintenance parts. This aspect of the business now accounts for a large percentage of its total operating activity.
Does Nevlock sell tuning parts?
Until recently, we’ve focused only on the supply of standard items, be they GM-branded or the same equipment from OEM suppliers, including Mahle, Elring, Febi and Victor Reinz. Demand for performance parts from our customer base, however, has encouraged us to develop a line of Nevlock-branded tuning products, including intercoolers, top hats, connecting rods and our soon-to-bereleased silicone hose kits for Z20LET and Z20LEH engines.
How many people work with you at Nevlock?
We’re a team of eighteen covering a wide range of roles from accounting to delivery duties. There are five dedicated warehouse operatives and a matching number of us taking care of sales enquiries, which come to us direct by telephone or through our popular eBay store. Additionally, I receive a surprisingly high number of orders through Facebook messenger!
How has the business changed over the years?
Nevlock’s profile has been greatly improved thanks to visibility at PVS, where we have a trade stand each year. We also work closely with a high number of owners clubs, including Z20LET Lovers. The last three years have been a particularly successful period of growth for the business, predominantly due to increased demand from owners of Astra G GSis and Astra H VXRs chasing what’s perceived to be increasingly accessible high power from their performance Vauxhalls. Reliability is key when hunting down big bhp. Thankfully, Nevlock can supply all the parts required for an engine rebuild.
What are the biggest challenges Nevlock faces when it comes to working within the Vauxhall scene?
Competition. To begin with, we had what felt like free reign to offer genuine parts at hugely discounted prices, but there’s now a number of companies attempting to replicate what we do. The key to our ongoing success is to stay involved with the scene, listen to what owners want and continue to satisfy their demands with great products at low cost.
Which performance Vauxhall offers the best bang for our buck?
It has to be the Astra H VXR. People still go mad for the model, not least of all due to the bottom falling out of sale prices. These cars make good power for not a lot of money, but finding a really good VXR to use as the starting point for a build is proving increasingly difficult. While it’s great to see them available without breaking the bank, the flipside is that many Astra VXRs are suffering neglect at the hands of owners who aren’t carrying out servicing or maintenance work as diligently as they should be.
The next big thing?
A tough question to answer, but I’d say a continuation of the quest for higher, more reliable horsepower from Z20LET and Z20LEH engines. Can we follow Nevlock online?
