Avoid camera shake

-

The rule of thumb when it comes to beating camera shake is to make sure the shutter speed is equivalent to or faster than the effective focal length of the lens

– so at least 1/500 sec for a 500mm lens on a full-frame camera like a Canon EOS 6D Mk II or 5D Mk IV. If you’re shooting on a camera with a smaller sensor, like an EOS 80D or 800D, multiply the focal length and shutter speed by the 1.6x crop factor for Canon APS-C models.
