levels

Tones are measured in a scale of levels. Darkest shadows have a level of 0, brightest highlights are 255; greyscale tones fall between.

clipping

If shadows are underexposed they are said to be clipped, and print out as pure black with no detail. Clipped highlights will print as patches of pure white.
