At one of the talks at The Photography Show, the presenter said they always shoot tethered. What is tethered shooting, and how do you do it?

BRIAN SAYS… Tethered shooting is when you connect the camera to your computer whilst shooting. As you take pictures they are automatically transferred to the computer giving a large screen to review the photos on. It also helps if you’re working with a team, as they can check if clothing, hair or make-up needs adjustment.
The term tethered comes from the connection, it’s usually a USB cable to connect between the camera and the software on your computer. Many EOS cameras with Wi-fi, can use a wireless link as an alternative to a cable method.
There are several different software programs that can be used, but all EOS DSLR cameras include EOS Utility, which works well. EOS Utility gives remote control of the camera settings, and Live View if you need it.
It’s possible to send a Raw file from the camera to computer, but these are large and, if you’re using a Wi-fi connection, take several seconds to transfer. Set the camera to shoot Raw + JPEG, and in EOS Utility, choose to only transfer the JPEG.
