TURNING THE SCREW

Twist locks are generally preferred, to clamp the extending leg sections

-

Not so long ago, flip locks seemed all the rage in tripods, for locking each extending leg section. More recently, twist locks have made a resurgence, to such an extent that the two Manfrotto tripods are the only ones in this test group to feature clip locks. An advantage of twist locks is that, when the sections are at their fully retracted positions, you can grasp all of the clamps in one handful and release or tighten them simultaneously. That said, the design of the Manfrotto 190XPRO4’S clip locks enable them to be operated in a single push-pull action. Even so, a slight drawback with clip locks is that you might need to adjust their tension settings at some point, to maintain optimum lock and release performance over time.
