01 LATIDOAMER­ICA

Arcenillas wanted to document the heart of uncontroll­ed violence in Latin America, and the social and political factors that aggressive­ly reinforce that violence, as well as the determinat­ion to end it. His series won Third Prize, Long-term Projects. In this image Roberto Arturo Adonay Antonio, allegedly a member of Mara 18 (an internatio­nal criminal organisati­on that originated as a Los Angeles street gang), arrives at a pre-trial detention center in Usulután, El Salvador.

02 SACRED NO MORE BY JASPER DOEST

Taking Second Prize (Stories) in the Nature category, Doest portrays the habituatio­n of protected Japanese macaques. Here, at a tavern north of Tokyo, they perform for guests. Portrayals of famous actors and politician­s, particular­ly Donald Trump, are popular among tourists.

03 ROHINGYA CRISIS BY PATRICK BROWN (PANOS PICTURES FOR UNICEF)

The bodies of Rohingya refugees are laid out after the boat, which they were attempting to flee Myanmar in, capsized about 8km off Inani Beach, near Cox’s Bazar, Bangladesh. Of 100 people on the boat, there were 17 survivors.

05 PEACE FOOTBALL CLUB BY JUAN D ARREDONDO

Former FARC guerrillas are returning to civilian life, many playing football with teams comprising members of the Colombian military and victims of the conflict. The plan is for the best players to form La Paz FC (Peace FC) football team.

Anti-racist protesters are thrown into the air, as a car plows into a group demonstrat­ing against a Unite the Right rally in Charlottes­ville, Virginia, USA. Heather Heyer was killed and 19 others were injured. The driver was charged with murder.

07 THE BATTLE FOR MOSUL BY IVOR PRICKETT (THE NEW YORK TIMES)

First Prize (Stories) winner in the General News category, Prickett’s set of images depicts the liberation of Mosul from ISIS. In this shot, Iraqi Special Forces soldiers survey the aftermath of an attack by an ISIS suicide car bomber, who managed to reach their lines in the Andalus neighbourh­ood – one of the last areas to be liberated in eastern Mosul.
