01 PICK A SIDE

Set up your lighting to the side of your subject. Here we’re using a beauty dish with a honeycomb, but you can use other modifiers like a softbox or strip box.

03 MOVE THE LIGHT

Move your light to the other side of your subject, in exactly the same position as it was on the previous side. Your subject should remain in the same place.

02 BROAD LIGHTING

Angle your subject’s shoulders to the light, with their head turned away. Don’t let the far side of their face fall fully into shadow, unless you want split lighting.

04 SHORT LIGHTING

If your subject didn’t move, they should be short lit! If you can’t move your light, keep everything in the same place and turn the subject’s head to the light.
