Simple Movements

using a single light source, we can change the shape of the subject’s face quite dramatically. All we’ve done, however, is move the light – in this case a gridded beauty dish on a Bowens Gemini 500 – from camera right to camera left. If we didn’t want to move the light, or if we were shooting with a light that we couldn’t move (such as natural light), we could ask the subject to turn her head instead. Both positions produce pleasing results, with a Rembrandt lighting pattern in each image, but the subject’s face in the top (broad-lit) photo appears much fuller, while in the bottom (short-lit) photo it seems much slimmer.
