Stunning imagery from the world of Canon photography
01 FLIGHT BY BASTIEN RIU
French photographer Bastien Riu captured the title of Nature Photographer of the Year 2018 with this fantastic ladybird photo. Technically accomplished in terms of composition, sharpness and lighting, more than anything else it shows Riu’s expertly honed eye – and the fact that great nature shots can be captured at home, not just in exotic lands or far-flung locales. Lens Unknown 150mm f/2.8 Exposure 1/8000 sec, f/5, ISO125
02 KILLER WHALE IN POLAR NIGHT BY AUDUN RIKARDSEN
This shot depicts the sheer scale and majesty of a submerged killer whale. The complementary colours of the fading golden hour and the Bombay Sapphire seawater create wonderful vibrance and establish the focal point of the image, with the Canon EOS-1D X’s dynamic range ensuring that all the details are captured. Lens Canon ef 11-24mm f/4l usm Exposure 1/250 sec, f/5, iso3200
03 MEETING POINT BY BENCE MATÉ
Looking like it was staged on a proscenium, you couldn’t have posed this more perfectly if you were working with trained performance animals! Photographers are often so worried about “losing detail in the whites,” but the almost-overexposed and near-monochromatic image that Maté has produced is a masterstroke of composition and exposure. Lens Canon ef 200mm f/2l is usm Exposure 1/2500 sec, f/3.5, iso3200
04 CATCHING FRUITS BY MARC COSTERMANS
Again demonstrating that great nature photography can happen anywhere, from Bangalore to your back garden, this wonderful shot shows that it’s always worth having your eyes open and your camera ready. A snappy shutter speed froze the hungry and twitchy squirrel, with a lovely bit of rim lighting provided by the ambient sunlight. Lens Canon ef 200-400mm f/4l is usm ext Exposure 1/250 sec, f/9, iso800
