Raw headroom

the histogram (and the image) you see on the back of the camera is always based on a JPEG version of the shot – even if you shoot Raw. Raw files hold more colour and tonal information than JPEGS, so, even if the histogram shows that the shot is overexposed or underexposed, the wider dynamic range of Raw files mean that you can rescue shots that you might otherwise have deleted.
