Technique Assessment

Nina gave Colin the some handy tips and help set him up to take splendid portraits outdoors

Fast shutter speed

“I Will shoot in manual. I want to keep my shutter speed for families at at least 1/500 sec; I’m quite wobbly and I’m aware of that, so I lock my arms in, but I always see movement if I drop beneath 1/500 sec. I shoot at f/2.8, as low as it will go for my lens, to give maximum subject separation. As for my ISO I’ll start tend to start at ISO500.”

custom White BALANCE

“In TERMS of white balance I shoot in kelvin, because I like a consistent image even though I’m moving between different locations. I want all my skin tones to be about the same, as such, I’ll set a custom white balance and shoot at about 6400 kelvin – though this might change depending on the skin tone of the subject.”
