with The EOS R currently being the only Canon stills camera with a UHS-II SD slot, it’s tempting to save some pennies and go for a more basic, budget reader and sacrifice the extra, but largely unnecessary, UHS-II transfer speed.

We’d never heard of the UGREEN brand, but who cares at this money, and at least the USB Type-c connector is bang up to date. You will however need an adaptor to plug in to a conventional USB port, and there isn’t one included.

As for transfer speed, maximum continuous read/write speeds of 89MB/S and 79MB/S are none-too shabby for our UHS-I test card, even if they do trail the other products on test by a small, but noticeable, margin when transferring a lot of images.

The short 7cm-long hardwired cable and compact reader body keep things portable and you can choose from black or white versions. A dedicated Microsd slot ups the value, but we’d still recommend spending extra for the Sandisk or Hama.
