Get the soft lighting look and camera set up right for great results
01 BLINDED BY THE LIGHT
For a fraction of the price of studio lighting kit, buy a diffused blind for your bedroom or lounge window for unbeatable soft lighting for portraits. Diffused light reduces light levels, so increase ISO accordingly.
03 CANON LENS CHOICE
We used the workhorse Canon EF 24-70mm f/2.8l lens at 70mm, but any kit lens or telephoto zoom will do. The combo of wide aperture and long focal length decreases depth of field to blur background elements.
02 EXPOSURE SETTINGS
We shot in Manual at f/2.8 to blur the foreground frame of the bed and body shapes behind the focal point of the model’s face. We set ISO to 200 for a shutter speed of 1/500 sec for sharp shots.
04 TRY SHOOTING INTO THE LIGHT
Once you’ve shot with the window behind you to light your subject, try shooting towards the light for some sexy silhouette-type shots. Learn to underexpose these portraits subtly for a more dramatic effect.
