3 LEGGED THING PUNKS COREY 2.0
£169/ $199 An immaculate little tripod that’s more than the sum of its cleverly designed 3 Legged parts
Passion, flair and attitude probably aren’t words that you’d normally associate with a tripod. However, they’re a perfect fit for 3 Legged Thing’s ‘Punks’ range of tripods, currently in version 2.0. Corey is the smallest of the gang, and the most travel-friendly. It diverts from the usual choice of aluminium or carbon fibre, instead being made from magnesium alloy, the same stuff of many pro-grade camera bodies and telephoto lenses, so it’s lightweight but super-sturdy.
The tripod folds down to just 36cm but extends to a useful maximum height of 146cm, with a beefy load rating of 14kg. It’s also packed with innovative features. The ‘Tri-mount’ camera platform has three hollowed out spurs for the easy attachment of accessories, and there’s also a threaded connection socket on the side of the spider. The centre column is invertible and removeable, and the ball head can mount directly onto the spider for really low-level shooting. You can unscrew a leg for monopod duty. Plus, the legs are removable and optional Vanz feet turn the Corey into a neat tabletop tripod.
Performance
The twist locks work well and the Corey is amazingly rigid and resistant to flexing for a travel tripod. You can buy the legs on their own but the Airhed Neo 2.0 ball head that’s supplied in the complete kit has similarly top-end performance and features a pan-only release and bubble level.
