Big year ahead for city

Pilbara News - - News - Peter Long Peter Long is the City of Kar­ratha Mayor.

Wel­come to 2019. I hope you all had a very spe­cial Christ­mas and happy new year, tak­ing some time to re­lax and catch up with fam­ily and friends.

We’re back for an­other year and a very ex­cit­ing 12 months is laid out be­fore us.

High­lights will in­clude the open­ing of the Wick­ham Com­mu­nity Hub, the start of work on the re­de­vel­op­ment of Dampier Palms and Hamp­ton Oval fore­shore and the con­struc­tion of Wel­come Park.

Works will also be­gin on the new ho­tel in the cen­tre of Kar­ratha, and the re­de­vel­oped Vic­to­ria Ho­tel will open in Roe­bourne fea­tur­ing a cul­tural cen­tre, the Roe­bourne Li­brary and vis­i­tor ser­vices on the ground floor.

In ad­di­tion, we’ll fo­cus on re­duc­ing re­cy­cling con­tam­i­na­tion lev­els via a num­ber of ed­u­ca­tion cam­paigns with lo­cal con­trac­tor Clean­away and we will con­tinue our drive to pro­vide qual­ity ser­vices, more foot­paths, bet­ter roads and in­creased light­ing.

We will in­tro­duce our Se­cu­rity Sub­sidy Scheme through the Safer Com­mu­ni­ties Part­ner­ship in March, we will host the De­vel­op­ing North­ern Aus­tralia Con­fer­ence at the Red Earth Arts Precinct in July and our events cal­en­dar will fea­ture an­nual favourites such as the Cos­sack Art Awards and Red Earth Arts Fes­ti­val.

With a strong team be­hind us the coun­cil is head­ing into 2019 con­fi­dent and de­ter­mined to make this our best year yet.
