FAM­I­LIES got up close to plus­sized ma­chin­ery, vis­ited an ac­tive min­ing pit and walked among wild­flow­ers dur­ing Al­coa’s 40 years of tours. Since 1978, more than 630,000 peo­ple have toured Al­coa’s WA op­er­a­tions, nearly five times the num­ber of res­i­dents of the Peel re­gion. Dawesville res­i­dent Mark Lucas took the op­por­tu­nity to show his wife and two young chil­dren where he works at Wil­low­dale. Mr Lucas said his fam­ily en­joyed vis­it­ing an ac­tive pit, where they saw an ex­ca­va­tor load baux­ite into haul trucks, then watched the trucks un­load the rock into a crusher, where it was bro­ken up.
