DRIVEWAY 46 www.communityn June 12, 2019 Hot in the city Iain Curry & Jules Lucht Most owners won’t ever use the rear seats so they can fold away to lug bigger stuff. It's a cheap-aschips $17,990 drive-away; an entry-level Picanto S is $14,990 on the road. JULES: IAIN: The micro car segment may be on life support these days but Kia’s Picanto is the shining saviour, smashing its diminutive rivals in the sales race. A sporty flagship Picanto GT with turbocharged three-cylinder has just gone on sale. THE LIVING SPACE SUNDAY RUN Seats are quite firm but don’t feel cheap with their leather accents. Nicely dressed up too. Red sides for the seats, red stitching for the steering wheel and gearshift gaiter and funky red door graphics too. It's just fun. The dash dials look a bit cheap but the screen is excellent and has Apple CarPlay, which is non-negotiable for me. You get what you pay for, so understandably there are hard plastics for the dash and doors. My fun day out in the Picanto GT would be big city shopping. It’s made for that. JULES: JULES: IAIN: You need a regular Picanto, I think. Kia Australia’s given the GT a custom ‘aggressive tune’ for the shock absorbers and stiffened up the springs. IAIN: FIRST IMPRESSIONS Oh, to be young again and able to buy a fun city car with no thought to space for children and their chattels. Keep dreaming. The reality is we’ve got this tiny Kia Picanto that needs to do the school run, shopping and weekend trips. IAIN: JULES: THE FAMILY The kids are pretty cramped in the back but there’s plenty of boot space for school bags. ANCAP gave the Picanto only a four-star crash rating. It’s not flush with active safety and it’s so titchy that it’s hard to recommend for family transport. JULES: JULES: IAIN: IAIN: THE COMMUTE I feared the worst on the highway but the Picanto doesn’t get blown around at speed as much as I expected. Not just any Picanto. A GT. Doesn’t GT mean Grand Tourer? As in performance and luxury? No offence but it’s a Picanto, not a BMW M6. Give it a chance. It’s the only turbo Picanto you can buy and it has red bits on the body. Suggesting it goes fast, right? Clearly. It is really cute and the red flashes in the grille, side skirts and bumpers mean it looks far less boring than most city cars. So how much is it and what would be my other options? IAIN: IAIN: Are your Boots Split? Are your Joints Noisy? Come and see Dick today! JULES: THE VERDICT The Picanto’s a great city car choice due to its cheap price, equipment and brilliant warranty. I’d think carefully before getting the GT though. I want to love this GT. Style, infotainment and sporty red highlights are all winners but it rides too harshly for me and I had to keep dropping down a gear to wake it up. At this price though, it is sensational value. True. It feels stable and not too noisy at speed but it’s better suited to city commutes. I’m a bit disappointed with the performance though. The 74kW three-cylinder turbo gets off the mark well but runs out of steam quickly.
