Shenmue I & II remaster announced at Sega FES
Shenmue III’s still on track to release this year, and now Sega has announced the Shenmue I & II collection for PS4. Fans will be able to take a nostalgic trip to the past on current-generation consoles to remind themselves what happened in the first two games in the saga, and Shenmue newcomers will finally be able to catch themselves up and enjoy a ground-breaking console series.
After the murder of his father for reasons unknown at the hands of the mysterious Lan Di, Ryo Hazuki takes to the streets to track the killer down. Fights and action are few and far between, with the focus being on exploring and investigating. It was, and still is, unlike anything else out there.
The bundle faithfully recreates the Dreamcast classics, with higher resolutions and refined textures. But that’s not the only way they’ll be modernised, as they’ll also feature an updated user interface and the option to choose between classic and modern control schemes.
All but the most rose-tintedspectacle-wearing fans will agree these improvements are sure to make the game more accessible to newcomers. As charming as they were, the originals did have a bit of clunk and chunk about them that hasn’t aged as favourably as the gripping story and laid-back small-town mystery atmosphere.
It’ll also offer the choice between the English dub, or Japanese dub with English subtitles, which is always a great option to have. But will Shenmue be the same without asking everyone “Where sailors hang out?” over and over in English?
